"Gladiatrix Locusta" represents about a year and a half to two years worth of work, though spread out over that time, of course. Much of the time was consumed in building the models in 3D, using Google Sketchup to create the sets. It would have been impossible to achieve this level of detail working by hand, and creating the great arena in Sketchup pushed my computer hardware to the limit.
This story is part of my world-building project, and Amazon planet called "Hera". When starting this story, I thought it would be about 15 or 16 pages, and take a couple of months. Well, it grew and grew. Just to create the opening couple of pages required a LOT of additonal work; cities that are of the same size as ancient Rome require a lot of modeling and drawing. And as the pages were done, the story took on a life of its own. The final project was worth the effort though!
I love the idea of beautiful women fighting to the death with swords, along with themes of slavery, the arena, and an alien backdrop, so this is something that I've wanted to do for over 20 years. It's a typical male fantasy, but the challenge is to push it a bit further than most in terms of quality.
